Michael O’Reilly, MBBCh, MSc, MPH, a previous CLEAR Center Fellow and Pilot Grant recipient, was recognized by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) this month for his research on the effectiveness of kyphoplasty for treatment of vertebral fractures. Using the IBM MarketScan Database, O’Reilly and collaborators identified patients under 65 years old with osteoporotic vertebral fractures and compared various outcomes of those who received kyphoplasty to those who did not. The results of the work indicated that kyphoplasty may not be as effective as had been originally thought in younger patients.
